Cristiano Ronaldo and girlfriend Georgina lost their twin boy

Cristiano Ronaldo and his longtime girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez have announced the untimely death of their baby boy, a twin.

Ronaldo and Rodriguez were expecting twins at the time.

Cristiano made the heartbreaking announcement on Instagram early Monday... and it's hard to read.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel," the 37-year-old soccer star wrote.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness."

The circumstances underlying the sad tragedy remain unknown.

Cristiano thanked the medical experts that assisted his family at the end of his post.

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time."

In October, Cristiano and Georgina revealed they were expecting twins. Then, in December, they revealed their gender (with the help of the entire family) when they learned they were having a boy and a girl.
